Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset wanted to transform a third-floor gallery in Hong Kong into an abandoned, underground boiler room where visitors can explore the space, interacting with the industrial pipework that’s brought to living reality with escaping steam.

The brief called for the design and build of a silent fog deployment system with a periodic timer trigger control. The resulting technology allows for precise and low noise operation, through an entirely new form of construction.

A.R.T achieved this using a custom system based on a medical grade pump, working with an onboard temperature sensor and controller to ensure consistent heat. To ensure the safety of visitors, the heating element is encased in ceramic insulation.
