A sculptural work forming part of BMW’s conceptual booth, using programmable bubble producing technology via a custom control system. In commissioning the artists to produce this work, BMW were keen to explore physical, sensory storytelling. In response, the artists devised a concept that places engineered systems alongside natural forces, allowing movement, airflow, gravity and chance to shape the final experience.
The array of pumps, bellows, tanks and tubing was visible on the rear side of the sculpture, allowing visitors to view the technology in action. On the front the result of these mechanical interactions was displayed as a choreographed sequence of mist filled bubbles emerging from 16 outlets on the hand finished aluminium surface.
Our solution for controlling the behaviour of the sculpture combined hardware and software working in sync, with a remote, app-based control surface allowing parameters to be set and fine tuned in real time. Primarily via DMX, this influenced the precise operation of the work, turning components and custom parts into the inner workings of a hypnotic, abstract immersive experience.
